How to Choose the Right Roadie for Your Tour

October 15, 2025

Finding the right roadie is one of those decisions that seems straightforward until it goes wrong. A skilled technician who melts down under pressure, or an easygoing personality who cannot wire a stage, will cost you more than the time it takes to vet properly. The hiring process deserves the same care you give to booking venues or rehearsing setlist order.

Start with referrals. The best roadies are rarely on job boards because they stay employed through word of mouth. Ask your booking agent, other touring acts, and venue production managers. A name that comes up three times from different sources is worth a phone call.

When you do speak to a candidate, prioritise situational questions over credentials. Ask how they handled a gear failure thirty minutes before doors. Ask what they do when the backline does not match the rider. Real answers to real scenarios tell you more than a CV. References matter too, but ring them yourself and ask specific questions rather than accepting a written testimonial.

Finally, consider temperament as seriously as technical ability. Touring is close quarters, long hours, and constant uncertainty. Someone who communicates well, stays calm under pressure, and takes initiative without overstepping will make every show go smoother. Technical skills can be topped up. Temperament rarely changes on the road.
